Over A Dozen State Attorneys General Sue TikTok for Harming The Mental Health Of Kids

The influence of social media on children’s mental health has sparked widespread concern, prompting legal action against major platforms like TikTok. Attorneys General Letitia James of New York and Rob Bonta of California have led a coalition of 14 states in suing TikTok for allegedly promoting addictive behaviors and compromising the mental health of children. The lawsuits accuse TikTok of using features like autoplay videos and beauty filters to keep young users engaged, ultimately exacerbating issues such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.

In addition to these concerns, TikTok is also being sued for allegedly violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by profiting from the data of children under 13. Despite TikTok’s assertions that the platform prioritizes user safety and regularly updates its features, the lawsuits argue that the company’s practices are misleading and insufficient.

Attorney General Letitia James emphasizes the dangers of TikTok’s viral challenges, which have led to injuries and even deaths among children. She believes that platforms like TikTok play a significant role in the growing mental health crisis among young people. Attorney General Rob Bonta of California shares this concern, stating that TikTok intentionally targets children to boost corporate profits, knowing that young users are more vulnerable to addictive content.

This legal battle follows similar actions taken against Meta, which was sued by 33 states for intentionally making its platforms addictive to children. The lawsuits against Meta also claimed that the company illegally collected data from children under 13, further highlighting the need for stricter regulations.

The question remains: are these social media platforms solely to blame for children’s mental health struggles, or should parents bear more responsibility in monitoring their children’s online activities?
