The recent announcements from tech giants Microsoft, Google, and Amazon show a growing commitment to nuclear energy as a way to power their operations with cleaner sources. Microsoft has partnered with Constellation Energy Corporation in a 20-year agreement to restart Unit 1 of the Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear plant. This collaboration aims to provide large-scale carbon-free energy to fuel the increasing power demands of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI (GenAI) technologies. The focus is not on reviving the decommissioned Unit 2, which suffered a partial meltdown in 1979, but on reigniting the nearby Unit 1, which was closed in 2019 due to economic reasons.
Following Microsoft's move, Google entered the scene by announcing a groundbreaking agreement to purchase energy from small modular reactors (SMRs) developed by Kairos Power. SMRs, a newer approach to nuclear technology, are known for their smaller size, quicker build times, and ability to be sited closer to existing energy grids. Google’s efforts are part of a broader strategy to reduce its carbon footprint by leveraging clean energy sources.
Amazon quickly joined the fray with its own series of nuclear energy agreements. Partnering with Energy Northwest, Amazon plans to build multiple SMRs in Washington state, initially generating 320 megawatts (MW) with the potential to expand to 960 MW—enough to power 770,000 homes. Amazon also invested in X-energy, aiming to bring over 5 gigawatts of nuclear power online in the U.S. by 2039. Additionally, Amazon collaborated with Dominion Energy in Virginia to explore new SMR projects near the North Anna nuclear power station.
These projects signal a major shift in the energy strategies of leading tech companies. Amazon’s investment aligns with its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040, a goal it is already progressing towards after achieving 100% renewable energy for its facilities seven years ahead of schedule. AWS CEO Matt Garman emphasized nuclear energy’s role in scaling clean power and reducing carbon emissions, calling it a critical area of investment for the future.
The focus on SMRs and nuclear energy by these tech giants could potentially inspire other technology conglomerates to follow suit. As companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon move towards cleaner energy solutions, the viability of nuclear energy—particularly with newer SMR technologies—could become more attractive across the industry. These developments could also have a ripple effect on energy infrastructure, creating economic opportunities in local communities through job creation during construction phases.
The adoption of nuclear power by tech companies is a significant step toward reducing reliance on fossil fuels while meeting the growing energy needs of data centers and AI technologies.
